BLACK SOCIAL HISTORY: BLACK LOYALIST OF NOVA SCOTIA: WERE MY FAMILY CAME FROM: THE " COLE FAMILY " :

When the Rebels of America decided to rebel and fight for their freedom, the Governor of Virginia Lord Dunmore lost control of the colony to the rebel in the summer of 1775, the economic of Virginia was based on Slave Labor. Lord Dunmore issued a proclamation that any Slave or Indentured Person would be given their freedom if they took up arms with the British against the rebels. As a result 2000 Slaves and indentured person joined his force. Later other British supporters in the colonies issued similar proclamation.

When the American won the war and the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783, the British and their Black Supporters had to leave the United States. They gathered in New York waiting to be evacuated to another part of the British Colony. Between April and November 1763  - 114 ships left New York for Nova Scotia, as many as 5000 Black People left New York for Nova Scotia including my family the "Cole" Family. You can find our name in the book of names of Loyalist Ex-Slave who went and lived in Nova Scotia.
