Black People served in the Navy since the beginning, and they worked as civilian and have provided it with important services from other works of life. One can run a Time Line of Black People services in the U.S. Navy from the 1860s as they were present in the crew of the U. S. Navy Ships through out the 19th century. The presence was greatly enhanced during the American Civil Wars as newly freed slaves and a greatly expanded Navy worked together in a common purpose. Some of the Images you are about to see are of Black People in the U.S. Navy ships from the 19th century onwards.

Black People and the U.S. Navy in the 1870s and 1880s, following the civil war, Black People continued to serve in unlimited number among the Navy Enlisted ranks, through a tendency to encourage then to become Officers Stewards was emerging. Black People and the U.S. Navy in the 1890s served with honor and full loyality right through the decade. Between 1900 to 1917 Black People served in the U.S. Navy even though the first decades of the twentieth century brought increasing restrictions on the role of Black People in American society.  The U.S. Navy was no exception, though the enlisted rates remained generally open to men of all races, Black People in America were been actively pushed into servant roles.
