BLACK SOCIAL HISTORY: SLAVERY IN LOUISIANA :

Chattel slavery was introduce by  French colonists in Louisiana in1706 when they made raids on the Chitimacha settlements. Thousands of indigenous people were killed and they took the surviving women and children as slaves. The French introduced African Chattel slaves to the territory in1710 after capturing a number as plunder during the war of the Spanish Succession.  Trying to develop the new territory the French transported more than 2000 Africans to New Orleans between 1717 -  1721 on at least eight ships. The death toll for Africans and Natives slaves was high with scurvy and dysentery wide spread because of poor nutrition and sanitation.

The demand for slavery increased among U.S.  settlers in Louisiana and other parts of the Deep South after the invention of the cotton gin 1793 and the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Cotton because the main crop in the north of Louisiana and sugar cane in the southern part of the state. In 1811 the largest slave up rising took place out side New Orleans as slaves rebel against the brutal work regimes of the sugar plantations. Slavery abolished in 1863 after the 13th Amendments.
