This wonderful book captures African American history in the United States beginning with the origin of the Slave Trade. The book also contains Special Features and contents of the National Negro Business League and Introduction by Booker T. Washington and Club Movement Among Woman by Fannie Barrier Williams.

The Purpose of the Colored American was to elevate the Negro to a new height. Written by White author J.W. Gibson and "Colored" author W.H. Crogman, the preface states:

"Our apology for presenting to the public a new book is not that there are not sufficient books already written on the Negro, but that to our knowledge there has been no attempt made to put into permanent form a record of his remarkable progress under freedom – a progress not equaled in the annals of history…Our motive throughout has been that of an increasing desire to aid in the work of elevating the Race for which many noble lives have been given.”

From the beginning of the Slave Trade, the Colored American traces the movement of the race from Negro Soldiers including the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and Spanish American War; The Underground Railroad; Notable Negroes; Plantation Melodies; The Moral and Social Advancement of the Race; and much more. The whole is illustrated by numerous woodcuts and original photographs throughout.
