The Obituary HELEN CURL HARRIS, was the oldest of six children born to the late John Wesley and Anna Dora Hunter Wallace on January 31, 1912 in Darlington, South Carolina. She departed this life on Tuesday, September 27, 2005, at the St. Ignatius Nursing Home where she resided for the past four years. Two brothers, Andrew Wallace and Everette Wallace and one sister, Marjorie Britt, preceded her in death. Helen received her formal education in the Darlington, South Carolina School System. In the early 1930’s, Helen relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She fellowshipped with the Union Baptist Church in South Philadelphia under the pastorate of the late Reverend Kirkland and recently fellowshipped with St. Matthew United Methodist Church at Vodges and Race Streets, West Philadelphia, under the pastorate of Reverend Johnson. Helen was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Mitchell Carl Curl and later to the late Al Harris of New York. Helen began her illustrious career after graduating from Skidmore Vocational School, one of the country’s outstanding beauty schools. She quickly obtained her license in beauty culture and hair design. Women in all fields of endeavor became regular patrons of Helen’s as she operated Curl’s Beauty Salon for over twenty years at the Trinity Apartments in West Philadelphia. In 1959 she opened her Modern Beautyrama at 5253 Chestnut Street, where she had nationwide esteem. She had the latest and finest equipment available. Whatever you needed in beauty supplies, Helen had it. Her business was unparalleled. Helen leaves to cherish her memory: one devoted sister and caregiver, Vivian Carrington of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; one brother, John Wallace of Hampton, Virginia; five nephews, James L. Wallace, Sr., Stanford Britt, George Wallace, Darryl Britt and Joseph Everette Carrington; three nieces, Diretta Howard, Annette Bright and Vivian Davis; and a host of relatives and friends.
