BLACK  SOCIAL  HISTORY                                                                                                                                                     Midland County Sheriff's Office Welcomes First Female African American Patrol Officer

MIDLAND - For the first time, the Midland County Sheriff's department has welcomed an African American female patrol deputy to the force. It's been a long-time dream for, Kim Mayfield who officially finished up her training last weekend to become a deputy.
During the day, Deputy Mayfield is taking care of three children all under the age of eight, at night she takes on a different role patrolling the county roads of Midland. It was a long time coming for her and something she says speaks volumes, not only to her children but to any woman looking to chase down their dreams.
"Just making sure that I have everything on my belt, and make sure that I am able to get to it, yeah about an hour," said Deputy Mayfield.
It's all still pretty new for Mayfield seeing how she has only "officially" been a patrol deputy for four days. Mayfield has worked with the Midland County Sheriff's department as a clerk for five years before she received her new job title.
"It's something that I have always wanted to do, I just didn't want to go out and just do it, I wanted to try other things first," she said.
Which helped fit with her busy schedule of raising three kids, but then her urge to fulfill her dream took over, she attended the academy, and is now the first African American female deputy officer for the Midland County Sherriff's office.
"I was just overwhelmed because I was thinking I have been here 31 years, so I was thinking there has to be someone before me. But when I found out that it was official I was excited and I thought it was pretty cool," said Mayfield.
So, now practicing for perfection and dressed for the part, deputy Mayfield hits the streets leaving us all just a little more inspired. "No matter what color you are, go out there and go for it."
