Aramis Ayala (born February 2, 1975)[1] is an American attorney who is the State Attorney for the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. Ayala was elected in November of 2016, and serves as the chief prosecutor of the Ninth Judicial Circuit of Florida.[2]
Ayala was born in Saginaw, Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan with an undergraduate degree. She then obtained her law degree from the University of Detroit.[
Controversy arose after she announced she would not seek capital punishment in any case, causing Governor Rick Scott to reassign potential death penalty cases to another State Attorney.[4] Ayala has filed lawsuits disputing this action in the Supreme Court of Florida, and in federal court.[5]
In July 2017 a video emerged of two police officers pulling over Ayala, on June 19, in what some have described as racial profiling.[6] However, others have disputed this.[7] In the video, the officers reasoned they pulled her over due to the darkness of her tinted windows, amongst other reasons given. Further in the video she requests the officer's names and identification numbers.
