BLACK SOCIAL HISTORY : AFRICAN AMERICAN BRIDAGIER GENERAL ALTON (AL) G. BERRY COMMANDING GENERAL REGIONAL SUPPORT COMMAND (RSC) : TOP BLACK STAR : GOES INTO THE " HALL OF BLACK GENIUS"

Brig. Gen. Alton (Al) G. Berry was selected as the 88th Regional Support Command (RSC) Commanding General as of 19 May 2012.  Brig. Gen. Berry was a Distinguished Military Graduate from the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., where he received a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy, and received a Regular Army commission as an Air Defense Artillery Officer in 1978. 
As a Second Lieutenant, Brig. Gen. Berry served as a Platoon Leader and Company Executive Officer in the 3d Infantry Division, in Wurzburg, Germany.  He also served as Battalion S1 and Headquarters and Headquarters Company Commander in the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade at Fort Bliss, Texas. 
Later, Brig. Gen. Berry served as the Senior Test Officer for the Hawk Phase III Missile System, also at Fort Bliss, Texas.  Upon leaving Fort Bliss, he served as Adjutant of the  902d Military Intelligence Group at Fort Meade, Md.  He then served in South Korea with the 19th Support Command and with 24th Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Ga.  Brig. Gen. Berry joined the Army Reserve in 1993, and performed duties as S1 and Executive Officer with 1st Battalion, 339th Regiment, in Sturtevant, Wis. 
He also served as Brigade S1 in the 7 Brigade, 84th Training Division, Milwaukee.  In 2004, Brig. Gen. Berry was assigned to the first of his two Brigade Commands with 2d Brigade, 84th Division in Beaver Dam, Wis.  He then commanded 9th Brigade, 100th Division in Beaver Dam for two years.  Brig. Gen. Berry served at the Pentagon as a Crisis Action Team Chief, in the Army Headquarters, G3 staff section. 
Just prior to his selection for promotion to Brigadier General, he served as the Director of Mobilization Resource Requirements in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs.  In 2008, Brig. Gen. Berry assumed the first of his two Division Commands with the 70th Training Division (Functional Training) in Fort Knox, Ky.  Subsequently, he took command of the 86th Training Division (Operations) at Fort McCoy, Wis., on 1 October 2010.
Brig. Gen. Berry’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Army Staff Badge.  Brig. Gen. Berry’s military education includes the Air Defense Artillery Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the Combined Arms and Services Staff School, the Command and General Staff College, and a Master of Strategic Studies degree from the U.S. Army War College.
Brig. Gen. Berry is married to the former Gwendolyn Edmond.  They have two adult daughters, Adia and Allena.  Since retiring from the Social Security Administration, Brig. Gen. Berry volunteers with the Fathers Being Involved (FBI) Program in Racine, Wis., where he mentors elementary school students.​
