                                  BLACK              SOCIAL            HISTORY                                                                                                                                                                         The bad old days when Black People were the but of racist jokes on prints that was the worst form of keeping oppressing going, so people did not feel guilty about the vile evil that they were inflecting on fellow human being sharing the same planet.                                                                                                                                              

I enjoy collecting comic linen cards of the 1940's. These cards  were meant to bring a chuckle. With bright colors, simple graphics, and direct humor, they distill a joke down to a minimum. Often the cards have the text being twisted to a new, humorous meaning by the simple, colorful picture. They are often bawdy in their humor. Some are much more direct, and even cruel in their jabs at females, ethnic groups and anyone else that was 'different'. As the scale of what is considered acceptable has changed, many of these cards have lost their humor. Many go so far beyond humor that they could not be sold today.

Postcard collectors often create topics of interest that go unnoticed by their fellow collectors.  Politically Incorrect seemed to be the best way for me to describe the over all theme of this collection. Obviously not a classical topic for collecting, this classification took shape as I acquired cards that I found interesting. Actually the breaking down into topics and sub-topics is an ongoing process. As I acquire more cards, they continue to group into new topics on their own.

Traditionally, linen cards have been the least desirable cards to serious collectors. They can easily be seen as a parody of the classic, finely crafted multi-colored lithographic postcards printed in Germany during the pre World War I era. Lowest ranked of the lowly linens were the comic postcards. They were routinely used (along with damaged cards) to bulk up bins of cards selling at 4 or 5 for a $1. In the years I have been collecting, these prices have steadily increased. The twenty five cent card that was the common then, is long gone. It appears that the lowly linen cars have finally been discovered by other collectors.

This presentation is not intended to offend, but rather to educate. It is a retrospective showing the progress made in the last century. While my collection is mainly the sexually oriented linen comic cards of the 40's, I have included postcards of other topics and eras to provide a wider view.
