Robert Benjamin Ageh Wellesley Cole, (March 7, 1907-October 31, 1995), was a Sierra Leonean medical doctor who was the first West African to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Background and Early Life

Robert Benjamin Ageh Wellesley Cole was born at No. 15 Pownall Street, Freetown, Sierra Leone to Wilfred Sydney Wellesley Cole and his wife, Elizabeth Cole (née Okrafo-Smart). The Wellesley-Cole family had three other children including Dr. Irene Ighodarowho was the first West African woman to qualify as a medical doctor.
The Wellesley-Coles were a Sierra Leone Creole family of partial Caribbean origin who also descended from Wolof and Yoruba Liberated African ancestors. The Okrafo-Smart family was another prominent Creole family largely of Igbo Liberated African descent.
Wilfred Cole was a successful engineer who was the first Sierra Leonean to serve as an assistant for the Public Water Works Department in Freetown. The Wellesley-Cole family was a middle-class Creole family, and Robert Wellesley-Cole grew up in a household of relative comfort and privilege.

Early Education

Wellesley-Cole was educated at the Government Model School in Freetown, Sierra Leone where he was taught by teachers such as William Campbell. Following the completion of his primary education, Wellesley-Cole was enrolled as the first student of the Government Model Secondary School, currently known as Prince of Wales Secondary School. Wellesley-Cole completed his studies at Prince of Wales and passed the Cambridge Entrance Certification in 1925.

Academic Career

Wellesley-Cole obtained Upper-second class honours from Fourah Bay College and proceeded to attend Newcastle University Medical School.

Medical Career

Wellesley-Cole was the first West African to become a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Due to discrimination in the West African Medical Service, Wellesley-Cole mainly practiced in the United Kingdom, although he did also practice in Ibadan, Nigeria and in his natal homeland of Sierra Leone.
Following Sierra Leone's Independence on April 27, 1961, then Prime Minister Milton Margai, offered Wellesley-Cole the position of senior medical officer.

Abdul Kady Karim


Abdul Kady Karim is a Sierra Leonean politician, accountant and academic. He is a member of the United National People's Party. He ran for President in the August 2007 general election and finished in 7th place with 7,260 votes nationally.

Education

Karim, an accountant by trade, was educated at George Washington University. He has taught his trade at Bowie State UniversitySoutheastern University[disambiguation needed], and Strayer University, the last being his occupation at the time of the 2007 presidential election.[citation needed]

Family

Karim has 6 children, which are evenly split between Sierra Leone and the United States. His wife is currently employed by the United States State Department in the Voice of America - Africa.[citation needed]

Walter McAfee


Walter S. McAfee (September 2, 1914 - February 18, 1995) was an African-American scientist and astronomer, notable for participating in the world's first lunar radar echo experiments with Project Diana.[1]

Biography

McAfee graduated from Wiley College in 1934, and received an MS at Ohio State University in 1937. He subsequently took a job in 1939 teaching physics in Columbus, Ohio.[2]
He enrolled at the Electronics Research Command at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, in May 1942, and it was here that he participated in Project Diana.[2]
McAffee died at his home in South Belmar (now known as Lake Como, New Jersey), on February 18, 1995.[2]
