Counter-Terrorism and Special Operations Bureau Commander Michael C. Williams is the Assistant Commanding Officer of Counter-Terrorism and Special Operations Bureau.  He has been a police officer for over 37 years and has a varied law enforcement background, which includes patrol, detectives and administrative functions within the Los Angeles Police Department.


Commander Williams joined the Los Angeles Police Department in February 1978 after having served as a police officer in a local suburban police department. Since joining the Los Angeles Police Department Commander Williams has worked as a patrol officer, training officer, vice investigator, homicide detective, field supervisor, watch commander and Internal Affairs Division investigator and section head. He has also supervised various administrative functions within the Office of the Chief of Police.

Specifically, some of his operational assignments have included Southeast and Hollywood Patrol Divisions, Pacific Area Vice, Organized Crime Investigation Division, Metropolitan Division, West Bureau CRASH (Community Resources Against Street Hoodlums), Southwest Area Homicide, Air Support Division and Special Investigation Section.

Prior to being promoted to his current position, Commander Williams was assigned as the Commanding Officer, Gang and Operations Support Division, North Hollywood Patrol Division and Air Support Division.

Commander Williams earned his Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from La Verne College. He is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s-National Academy and a graduate of the Police Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police at Boston University.  Commander Williams has completed certificated sessions at the Harvard Law School’s Negotiation and Leadership Program.  In addition to his membership in various professional organizations, Commander Williams is a member of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Best Practices Committee; as well as a contributor to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) on best practices on policing peaceful assemblies in participating states.
