BLACK SOCIAL HISTORY Is it true Dr. Alpha Wurie?
As the Sierra Leone Peoples’ Party race for a presidential material or aspirant intensifies, I have heard another name being mentioned by the rumor mills that he too is interested in the race.
I chose to use the words PRESIDENT Material and PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANT because majority of the names that have emerged are more of presidential aspirants than a presidential material.
Some of these aspirants are not thinking that their party is looking for a president; they think the party just wants an aspirant to contest 2012 elections, which have brought all Jack and Gill to the fray for such a difficult an enviable position.
Anybody who wants to contest the 2012 elections from the opposition SLPP must be aware that he or she should have what it takes to be on the same floor with President Ernest Bai Koroma because our president was not an aspirant but a material. That was why his party gave him the mandate to run twice for the coveted position he holds now.
So when I heard that Dr Alpha Wurie was interested in the SLPP contest, I cannot seat but give my own opinion on this rumor whether it is true or false.
In my heart of heart, I believe that this man is very qualified for such position because he will definitely fulfill all conditions of a president.
Firstly, I think Dr Alpha Wurie is a presidential material because his 11 years as Minister of Education made him popular as he played his own part to improve education. I know he has his own short comings, but his achievements are there for all to see and wherever the name Dr Alpha Wurie is mention that name will lingers in people’s mind.
Secondly, this man has a very cordial relationship with his family. He does not have a ceremonial wife and I am very sure that since their marriage they have been sleeping together as husband and wife. During the day we can see them together at their business place on Liverpool Street chatting and working in a peaceful and harmonious environment.
Thirdly, he is well qualified and very intelligent to the point that he will never use a candle to refuel a generator. His time at Fourah Bay College as lecturer will always speak for itself as well as Minister of Education. He is able to take the correct decision and the right time and can be shrewd leader.
My fourth point is Dr Wurie is one of few Sierra Leoneans that develop a business that has been for decades. Ramsy Medical has been around for a while and has been one of the best medical laboratories in the country. Most of the staff in this institution has worked there for long, which is a testimony of good management. The reason why this business has been a success is Alpha Wuire’s vision and innovation to make it a success backed by his loving wife.
Also Dr Wurie can articulate extremely well and to some extent I can even refer to him as an orator, because he knows how to choose his words and how to deliver under any circumstances. His speeches as minster can prove me right or wrong and his maturity in solving the SLPP impasse two years ago was an added advantage.
On the question of tribalism, he has never been a one, because most of his friends cut across tribal lines, and his 11 years as Minister of Education, scholarships awarded to international students were never based on region or tribe because he gave the same opportunity to all Sierra Leoneans to have the same privilege. He never presided over grant-in-aid because he wants to be tribalistic or to politicize it. Every student during his reign had equal opportunity to be awarded scholarship.
Dr Alpha Wurie is handsome and can match any leader as he is young, energetic and very smart to be a good leader.
2012 elections will only be a competitive one if SLPP can put forward someone that can match or even better President Bai Koroma, or else they will continue to be in the opposition.
Let them look for a presidential material than an aspirant that will not push deeper into the opposition because the mentality of Sierra Leoneans is changing as well as global politics. We are now voting for someone who will deliver in the shortest possible time and not someone who will need 10 years to change the face of the country.
I believe in Dr Alpha Wurie than all the other aspirants that have shown interest, maybe there will be other names coming up, but for now I think Alpha Wurie can be the best bet for SLPP if they have plans in recapturing power in 2012.
