BLACK SOCIAL HISTORY : HOWARD GALE LIVERPOOL BORN FOOTBALLER : GOES INTO THE " HALL OF BLACK GENIUS"

Howard Anthony Gale born 18th May 1958, is a former English Footballer who played for Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham, Halifax Town, Liverpool Football Club, Newcastle United, Sunderland and Stoke City. Gale began his career with Liverpool and made the head lines after becoming the first Black Play the Anfield Side. After loan spells with Fulham and Newcastle United, he joined Birmingham City in search of regular first team football. He then played for Sunderland and had a short spell in the United States playing indoor football for Dallas Sidekicks. He returned to England and played for Stoke City, Blackburn Rovers  and ended his career with Halifax Town. Gale was born in Toxteth and joined the youth ranks at local side Liverpool in 1974 and signed a professional contract with the club in 1977 becoming the first Black Player to play for Liverpool Football Club which was seen as a victory for the Black Community in Liverpool.

His finest hour for Liverpool came in the 1980 - 1981 European Cup Semi-Finals second led away at Bayer Munich and was reward with a winners medal at the end of the season as a non-playing substitute in the final.After a loan spell at Fulham and Newcastle United saw him leave after making five appearances. He joined Birmingham City were he played in the 1982 - 1983 season scoring once against West Ham and then hit ten in forty five during the campaign. Gale them signed for Sunderland were he became a popular player playing for two seasons before moving to the United States were he played indoor football with the Dallas Sidekicks. He came back to England in April 1987 and played for Stoke City. He moved to Blackburn Rovers were he spent  five years. Gayle joined Halifax Town, then on to Carlisle United.
