BLACK SOCIAL HISTORY LaVan Davis born September 21, 1966 is an American singer and actor best known for his starring role as Curtis Payne on the TBS comedy-dramaTyler Perry's House of Payne. Davis has also played many roles in Tyler Perry's various productions.
Career
Davis' acting career began in 2004 with his first role as Leroy in the film, Mind benders. In 2005, he made a guest appearance in a two episodes of Everybody Hates Chris as a preacher. The following year, Davis was cast as the cranky patriarch of the Payne family, Curtis Payne, in the TBS sitcom Tyler Perry's House of Payne. Davis worked with Perry again in two of his feature films including Daddy's Little Girls in 2007 and Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns in 2008.
In addition to his work in films and television, Davis has also appeared in the stage plays Why Did I Get Married? as Poppy, and Madea Goes to Jail as Leo.
LaVan Davis is a familiar presence onstage with his portfolio of highly acclaimed, African-American stage plays which have been on tour over the years. He was an audience favorite as Crazy Joe in the touring production of De Obeah Mon. He was also part of Mickey Stevenson’s The Gospel Truth and essayed dual roles as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and The Buffalo Soldier in Maurice Kitchen’s Voices. Davis also has an impressive musical background as member of the original Ricky Grundy Chorale and featured lead singer on the group’s recording of "Lead Me On." Once a member of the L.A. Mass Choir, Davis is currently studying opera.
