'They had all these gifts ready to give him': Three teenage daughters of officer shot dead by prisoner reveal their heartbreak on Father's Day

  • Veteran New Orleans officer Daryle Holloway, 46, was shot on Saturday
  • He was pronounced dead at a New Orleans hospital after 22 years' service
  • His three daughters and one son had just bought Father's Day presents
  • One daughter, 16, said he was planning on retiring in a few years
  • Suspect, Travis Boys, 33 was able to get his hands out of handcuffs, grab a firearm and shoot Holloway, police said
  • Cruiser then crashed into a utility pole and Boys escaped on foot
Three teenage girls and a teenage boy are heartbroken after their father, a veteran police officer, was shot dead just hours before Father's Day.
Daryle Holloway, 46, was killed on Saturday morning in New Orleans as he drove a man suspected of assault to the city jail.
Travis Boys, 33, had smuggled a gun into the cop car and managed to twist his hands to shoot Holloway as they drove. Boys then fled and remained at large.
As a manhunt is under way to capture the suspect, Holloway's ex-wife and three daughters and son are in mourning, left with Father's Day gifts they will never get to give him.
'They're taking it pretty hard,' his ex-wife Nicole Holloway told the New York Daily News in reference to their three teenage daughters.
'I took my youngest daughter shopping for Father's Day gifts yesterday. She had all these gifts waiting to give him tomorrow. She made sure her dad was taken care of for tomorrow.'

His 16-year-old daughter Cydni told the Daily News she had just finished wrapping up a t-shirt and bottle of cologne for her father when she heard the news. She said he was planning to retire in a few years.
'He was looking forward to that,' she said. 'He was always there for me. I enjoyed hanging out with him way more than hanging out with my friends.'
His son Dillon Johnson, 13, said: 'He was a good cop, he was a very good person. I woke up, my mom was crying, saying my dad had just died. I lost my dad.'
According to New Orleans police, Boys came from the back seat into the front seat through a hole in the cage, Harrison said. A manhunt is now underway for Boys.
Police said the 22-year veteran had been transporting Boys from the NOPD Fifth District Station to Orleans Parish Prison after the escaped prisoner had been arrested for aggravated battery and outstanding warrants.
After Boys shot Holloway, the cruiser crashed into a utility pole near a Shell gas station and the man escaped on foot. Emergency responders arrived at the scene after 8am, police said.
Boys is described as a black male who is around 5'11' and has a tattoo on the left side of his neck.
Police believe he might be in a black pick-up truck with license plate number B850532, according to WVUE.

Following the incident, Mayor Mitch Landrieu released a statement calling Boys' act cowardly.
'This despicable, cowardly act represents the lowest of the low. Killing an officer in the line of duty is an attack on our community that will not stand,' he said.
'We are bringing together every law enforcement resource at our disposal to find, capture and prosecute Travis Boys for this heinous crime.
'The heart and soul of New Orleans is heavy today as our community mourns one of our city's finest.
'The thoughts and prayers of all New Orleanians are with Officer Holloway's friends and family and with the entire NOPD family.'
Harrison said that justice will be served and that Boys will pay for what he did.
'He will be caught and he will be brought to justice for the murder of Officer Holloway and for this assault on our entire community,' he said.
Police and other law enforcement, including state troopers, St. Tammany Parish sheriff's deputies are searching for Boys, who was initially arrested on an aggravated assault charge, Gamble said.
