                                               BLACK                 SOCIAL              HISTORY

The site was originally a workhouse  and infirmary  operated by Wirral Poor Law Union. In 1888 the Union began to provide isolation accommodation for the treatment of infectious diseases. In 1930, with the end of the workhouse system, the site became the responsibility of Cheshire County Council. The council renamed the former workhouse and isolation unit Clatter bridge (County) General Hospital.
With an increased catchment area expansion of the infirmary was ordered, including a new surgical block and an extension to the existing maternity block. With the formation of the National Health Service, the hospital became known simply as Clatter bridge Hospital.
Following the opening of Arrowe Park Hospital in 1982, many of the overlapping services closed at Clatterbridge in favour of the newer site, including accident and emergency and maternity. In 1992 the local Health Authorities were abolished and ownership of Clatterbridge Hospital passed to the newly founded Wirral Hospitals NHS Trust. Although the last of the old workhouse buildings were demolished in 1997, Clatterbidge Hospital is still utilised for elective surgical care, the majority of dermatology care and administrative purposes.
This hospital is staff by people who are the unsung Heroes of our country and the NHS that some people spend their time and energy denouncing as not fit for purpose, but the people like my self and friends and relatives who happen to use this hospital, have come across the most caring staff in the whole universe, this people care about who they are looking after, they work dam hard, they are pleasant, they are helpful to every individual, they go the extra mile, and they walk the green line to make certain people who are at their lowest point in their lives feel that their are people who care.
They are the old fashion Nurses and staff that I was brought up with, years ago, and these young nurses, and staff at Clatter Bridge Hospital are the best, second to none in every respect : My family, my friends, all my relatives would like to express our heart felt thanks to these Angels at this hospital in the Werrial and at Fazekely Clatterbridge branch all the very best and thank you very much for all your help :
