Marvin Anthony Sordell (born 17 February 1991) is an English professional footballer who plays for Burnley as a striker.
Sordell started his career with Watford and graduated from their academy, before transferring to then-Premier League club Bolton Wanderers after showing good form during the 2011-12 season.
Sordell has played for England U21, and also represented Great Britain Olympic football team at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Club career
Watford
Sordell was born in the London suburb of Pinner.[3] When playing under-8s football for a team called "St Josephs", he initially played in goal, as the team did not have a goalkeeper, before becoming a striker and scoring a hat-trick in his first game. He joined the Fulham academy at under-14 level, but wasn't offered a scholarship, instead becoming a scholar atWatford after impressing at an exit trial.[4] He signed a professional contract in April 2009.[5] In November 2008, he joined Isthmian League club, Wealdstone on work experience.[6] He made his professional debut for Watford on 15 August in the Championship in the 2–0 away defeat against Sheffield United, replacing Nathan Ellington as a substitute in the 72nd minute.[7][8] His first competitive goal for Watford came when he scored in a 2–1 League Cup defeat at Leeds United on 25 August 2009.[9]
On transfer deadline day (31 January 2010), Sordell was loaned out to Tranmere Rovers on a month-long contract, to gain some 1st-team experience.[10] The loan was later extended by a month.[11] Sordell scored his first league goal for Watford in a 4–0 win over Coventry City on 2 May 2010.
Sordell started the first game of Watford's 2010–11 season, a 3–2 away win against Norwich. Despite the arrival of Troy Deeney, and the good form of Danny Graham, Sordell managed to retain his place in the team. He started eight of the club's first nine matches of the season, and scored five goals in the same period.[12][13]
Bolton Wanderers
On 31 January 2012, Sordell signed for Bolton Wanderers on a three-and-a-half-year contract for an undisclosed fee.[14]He made his debut on 4 February when coming on as a substitute for David N'Gog in Bolton's game at Norwich City which they eventually lost 2–0.[15] He would go onto make two further substitute appearances that season.
Sordell started the first three games of the 2012–13 season and scored his first goal for Bolton on 24 August 2012, in a 2–2 draw at home to Nottingham Forest.[16] He scored his second goal for Bolton in a 2–2 draw with Premier League side Sunderland in the FA Cup on 5 January 2013.[17] In the replay he scored both goals in a 2–0 victory at the Stadium of Light. In spite of this, he was still dropped for Bolton's next league game. In his next appearance, he netted again with a neat low finish against Everton in a 2–1 loss. The following game he was rewarded with a start, against his old club Watford, and scored a penalty in another 2–1 loss.
Loan to Charlton Athletic
On 1 August 2013 it was announced that Sordell had completed a year long loan deal to Charlton Athletic in a double-signing for the Addicks in which they also signed Welsh international Simon Church on a two-year deal. [18][19] He scored his first goal for the club against Huddersfield Town in the League Cup on 27 August 2013.[20] On 21 April, Sordell scored a hat-trick against Sheffield Wednesday, his first of his senior career.[21]
Burnley
On 4 July 2014, newly promoted Premier League club Burnley confirmed that they had signed the striker from Bolton Wanderers on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee.[22]
He was an unused substitute as they began the season with a 3–1 defeat at home to Chelsea, but made his Burnley debut as an added-time substitute for David Jones on 23 August as the team lost 1–0 at Swansea City.[23]
International career
In the 2010–11 season, Sordell made his international debut for England under-20s, scoring England's goal in a 2–1 defeat to France. Sordell scored his first goal for England under-21s in a 5–0 victory over Iceland in November 2011.[24]
Experienced Republic of Ireland international’ who Sean Dyche knew from their days playing together with Millwall. Sordell, evidently a precocious talent, was 12 when Dyche was at Millwall.
Great Britain Olympic football team
On 2 July 2012, Sordell was named in Stuart Pearce's 18-man Great Britain squad for the 2012 London Olympics.[25] He made his debut in a friendly match against Brazil on 20 July 2012 prior to the start of the Olympics.

Charity work
In 2012 Marvin Sordell became interested in the topic of human trafficking after reading the story of Sophie Hayes, a young British woman who was sexually exploited. Marvin contacted the woman's charity the Sophie Hayes Foundation on Twitter and asked if there was anything he could do to help. Marvin uses social media to raise awareness of the issue and has set up the Marvin Sordell Foundation (MSF) to raise money for charities such as the Sophie Hayes Foundation and SPORTSforFREEDOM. In March 2013 the MSF foundation organised a gala dinner fundraiser.[33][34]
