BLACK SOCIAL HISTORY Constance was first elected to the Vancouver Park Board in 2008. She was re-elected in 2011 and topped the polls with over 62,000 votes in each election. She has been a senior executive at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden for more than 8 years and is currently the Partnership and Rentals Executive Manager.
Constance has focused on affordability and accessibility while on the Vancouver Park Board, pushing for the One Card, which provides universal access to fitness centres, pools, rinks and participating community centres. She is currently a member of the City of Vancouver’s Joint Council on Child Care, a member of the Coalition of Child Care Advocates of BC, a Vancouver Public Library Trustee, and sits on the Active Transportation Policy Council. She is also former liaison to the City of Vancouver’s LGBTQ Advisory Committee as well as the Accessibility and Disability
Committee. Constance is currently active as a liaison to more than 10 organizations and community centres in Vancouver.
Constance raised her son and daughter as a single parent. She was a professional model and actress traveling internationally on work assignments. She is a long-standing member of ACTRA and the Union of BC Performers.
Constance is an avid cyclist, loves the arts, and is committed to social justice. Like her late father Emery Barnes, one of the first Black politicians elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Constance continues to emphasizes human rights, poverty issues and the environment in her political work.
