Sierra Leonean Professor and former Head in the Engineering Department at St. Francis Xavier University (STFX) in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada, Dr. Willie Quinn, P.Eng., has received international recognition for his prowess in the field of aeronautics and astronautics. Quinn has been elevated to the grade of Associate Fellow in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) making him one of only two individuals from Canada to be inducted into the AIAA Associate Fellows class of 2013.
One of his Sierra Leone students in Canada, Mary Hawa Turay was very enthusiastic as she broke the news to Sierra Leoneans on Facebook.

"Uncle Willie, as I call him, has played the role of an uncle to me and my family in a foreign land away from home. He is one of the finest people I have the privilege to acquaint myself with not just as a Sierra Leonean but also as a student during my undergraduate and graduate studies and now as a staff in this fine university StFX. Dr. Quinn is well-respected among his professional colleges and the community. He makes me feel proud to tell people that he is my fellow Sierra Leonean," she said.

AIAA Associate Fellows are individuals of distinction who have made notable, valuable contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics.

“I have been fascinated with the subject of aeronautics since my last two years in high school,” Dr. Quinn says. “I feel very honoured to be recognized by my peers in the aerospace community at this time in my career.”

He accepted the award at the 51st Aerospace Sciences Meeting, held recently in Texas.

The AIAA is the premier professional society for the field of aerospace engineering. AIAA is the world’s largest technical society and a global leader for the aerospace profession. The institute is dedicated to the advancement of science and engineering in aviation, space and defense. Dr. Quinn himself is reported to have an active research program in turbulent jet flows, computational fluid dynamics & low speed aerodynamics.
