BLACK SOCIAL HISTORY Asghedom (born August 15, 1985), better known by his stage name Nipsey Hussle (often stylized as Nipsey Hu$$le), is an American rapper from Los Angeles, California. He has released many mixtapes, including the Bullets Ain't Got No Name series,The Marathon, The Marathon Continues, and Crenshaw. In 2014 he plans to release his debut studio album Victory Lap via his All Money In record label.
Music career
2005-2009: Bullets Ain't Got No Name series
Nipsey's first recorded mixtape, was Slauson Boy Volume 1, and soon became the name of his own record label.[2] In 2008 Nipsey released two mixtapes, Bullets Ain't Got No Name, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2,[3] after signing with Cinematic Music Group and Epic Records.[4][5] In 2009, his debut single, "Hussle In The House", was released. In 2009 he released a third mixtape Bullets Ain't Got No Name, Vol. 3. He then collaborated with Drake on the song "Killer"[6] and on the song "Upside Down" on Snoop Dogg's album Malice n Wonderland with Problem.[7]
In 2010 he appeared on the song "We Are the World 25 for Haiti".[8] He was chosen as one of XXL Magazine's "Annual Freshman Top Ten", a selection of ten up-and-coming artists in 2010.[9] as "Most Determined"[10] At the time he drew comparisons to Snoop Dogg and he was "next big L.A. MC."[11] to A major label debut studio album, South Central State of Mind, was expected in October 2010. It was supported by the single "Feelin' Myself" featuring Lloyd. He had set J.R. Rotem, Scott Storch, Mr. Lee, Play-N-Skillz,Terrace Martin and 1500 or Nothin', to produce on the album. Trey Songz, Jay Rock and Sean Kingston were also set to appear on it. He also announced plans to release a mixtape with Jay Rock titled, Red and Blue Make Green.[12] Following the release of the "Feelin' Myself" music video, the album was set for a December 21, 2010 release.[13] However both these projects would end up being indefinitely postponed.
2010-2011: Leaving Epic Records & The Marathon
After going through label trouble with Epic Records he would be released from the label in late 2010, and founded All Money In his own record label.[11][14] His first project released after his split from Epic was The Marathon mixtape. The mixtape was released December 21, 2010.[15] It features guest appearances from Kokane and MGMT.[16] On November 1, 2011 Hussle released a sequel, with the mixtape The Marathon Continues, which featured YG and Dom Kennedy. Both are available via iTunes.
2012-present: Crenshaw and Victory Lap
In early 2012, it was rumored Nipsey Hussle would be signing to Rick Ross's Maybach Music Group.[17] Nipsey made a guest appearance on rapper YG's 2012 single "Bitches Ain't Shit", also featuring Young Money rapper Tyga. The song samples the classic Dr. Dre song "Bitches Ain't Shit".[18] The song debuted on the Hot 100 at #100 and on the Heatseekers Songs chart at #11.[19] On April 17, 2012 Hussle released a collaboration album with fellow rapper Blanco titled Raw. The album features rappers YG, Mistah FAB,Yukmouth, B-Legit, Kokane and Freeway.[20] In May 2012, he released a single "Proud of That" which featured Rick Ross.[21] He was also featured on Maybach Music Group's song "Fountain of Youth" which appeared on the label's second album Self Made Vol. 2.[22] A music video was released on October 1, 2012.[23] In December 2012 Nipsey hinted more at signing with Maybach Music Group/Warner Bros. Records but said he would still be looking more for the right label.[24]
Hussle said he would release his third and final instalment in The Marathon mixtape series with TM3: Victory Lap in early 2013 after it was pushed back from its December 2012 release date.[25] He also announced plans to release a mixtape with fellow West Coast rapper and frequent collaborator YG titled Two Of America’s Most Wanted in 2013. It was set to feature Dom Kennedy and DJ Mustard.[26] Hussle performed at the 2013 Paid Dues festival on March 30, 2013 in California.[27] However, after deciding against signing to a major label, due to them not giving him enough creative freedom, he choose to make Victory Lap his debut album.[28]
Starting in early 2013 he released various songs from Crenshaw including the 9th Wonder produced "Face the World" and The Futuristics and 1500 or Nothin' produced "Blessings".[29] On August 6, 2013, Hussle announced that Victory Lap would now be a studio album rather than a mixtape. He confirmed that the tracklist and release date would be revealed very soon.[30][31][32] On September 1 and 2, 2013, Nipsey Hussle released his previous mixtape X-Tra Laps, and a load of old songs as singles to iTunes.[33] This included various old mixtape songs "Thas Wat Hoes Do" featuring YG, "Rose Clique", "Rich Roll", "Keys 2 the City", "I Need That" featuring Dom Kennedy and "Run A Lap".[34][35][36][37][38][39]
On September 16, 2013, Nipsey Hussle announced he would release a new mixtape Crenshaw hosted by DJ Drama, on October 8, 2013.[40] On September 24, 2013, he revealed the tracklist for Crenshaw, which contained guest appearances from Rick Ross, Dom Kennedy, Slim Thug, James Fauntleroy II, Z-Ro, Skeme and Sade among others. Production was handled by, The Futuristics, 1500 or Nothin', 9th Wonder, Mike Free, Ralo and Jiggy Hendrix among others. He also released the "Crenshaw" documentary that day in promotion of the mixtape.[41] On October 2, 2013, Hussle released two greatest hitscompilation albums to iTunes, Nip Hussle the Great Vol. 1 and Vol. 2.[42][43] On October 3, 2013, he released another trailer for the mixtape, also revealing 1,000 hard copies of the mixtape would be sold for $100 each.[44][45] He reportedly sold out all 1,000 copies in less than 24 hours, effectively making 100,000 dollars.[46]
Upon the release of Crenshaw, Hussle said that Victory Lap would be released in early 2014.[47] On October 14, 2013, Hussle told Complex that the first single from Victory Lap is titled, "Rap Niggas" and was ready for release.[28] The album will be again be sold for $100 via the Proud 2 Pay program, however it will be available for normal rate via iTunesand retail stores such as Best Buy and Target.[48] On November 20, 2013, Hussle confirmed that Victory Lap would feature production by Ralo, 1500 or Nothin', The Futuristiks and DJ Mustard.[49] He later confirmed that he had worked with producers Don Cannon and DJ Khalil on the album.[50]
Personal life
Nipsey Hussle was raised near the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue in South Los Angeles.[51] He is also a member of the local Rollin 60's Neighborhood Crips gang.[52]
He is of Eritrean descent from his father's side and African American descent on his mother's side.[52] He has a young daughter named Emani, however, he is separated from her mother.[53][54]
Other ventures
Acting career In 2007 Nipsey played a small role in Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's semi-autobiographical film I Tried directed by Rich Newey. In 2010 he starred in the film Caged Animal alongsideVing Rhames, Major Figgas, and Robert Patrick.[55][56]
