BLACK SOCIAL HISTORY: BLACK CONFEDERATES IN THE CIVIL WAR:

Across the south there was a significant minority of slaves and freemen that sided with the Confederacy.. Normally the free blacks serving in the Confederacy received equal pay of the white confederate private , With slaves there pay was not guaranteed. There pay went to their masters wishes, others were promise freedom for services late in the war. Some black Missourians sided with the Confederacy not because they were fighting to preserve slavery, but because they believe it was their duty to defend their people from the Yankee invaders.
