BLACK SOCIAL HISTORY : SLAVERY IN DELAWARE :

The first Black Slave in Delaware was named Anthony has been brought up from the West Indies in 1639. African Slavery did not truly begin in s large scale in Delaware until the Dutch took over. Peter Stuyvesant the aggressive Director General set out to established a Dutch Colony in the Delaware Bay area. The Dutch began to bring African across the Atlantic to work the land in the new colony on the Delaware.
The number of slaves declined after the English conquest of New Netherlands in the fall of 1664 but rise again in the early 18th century as labor intensive tobacco and corn economy expanded.
































Most of the slaves were generally purchased in Philadelphia or from the Eastern Zone. Between 20%  and 25% of the colony population was enslaved. The American Revolution disrupted the economy what replaced corn and tobacco as cash crops. The state law banning the sale of slaves from Delaware to Carolina, Georgia and the West Indies, slaves importation was finally out law in 1776 Constitution.
