He was born on 15 June 1978 in Helmond, Netherlands.
Wilfred’s professional career took off in PSV Eindhoven. The young back made his début in the match against Willem II on 26 October 1994. In 1996 Bouma and his team lifted the KNVB Cup, which, however, did not help him to cement a place in the main squad.
In the summer 1996, the footballer completed a move on loan to Eerste Divisie side MVV and helped the temporary team to make its way through to the Eredivisie promotion. Wilfred made 51 appearances and found the net 13 times for the club during two seasons.
In 1998 Bouma continued his career on loan in Fortuna Sittard. From the very beginning, the footballer became a regular and fired five goals in 33 games (out of 33 possible) during one season.
In the summer 1999, Wilfred returned to his parent PSV and performed for the main team of the club during six following years. The player managed to lift the KNVB Cup (1996, 2005, 2012), the Johan Cruijff-schaal (2000, 2001, 2003, 2012) and strolled to the golden medal of the Eredivisie (2000, 2001, 2003 and 2005).
In the summer 2005, Bouma transferred to English side Aston Villa and penned a contract worth €5.5 million. The footballer’s first and only goal came on 9 February 2008 in the match against Newcastle United.
In 2010 the back returned to PSV, where he planned to finish his career. During three seasons, Wilfred made around 100 appearances and kicked six goals for the club. In the summer 2013 he was released from the club.
From 2000 till 2012, the footballer was capped 37 times and contributed two goals for the Netherlands national team. Besides, he participated in Euro 2004 and Euro 2008.
