BLACK SOCIAL HISTORY : BLACK PEOPLE IN MURITANIA - THE LAST SLAVERY COUNTRY ON THE PLANET :

Mauritania abolished slavery in 1981 but only made it a crime in 2007. Since then only one slave owner has been successfully prosecuted, the first step to change is for the country to get serious about enforcing the law it already has on its books. It should list cases of slavery victims and prosecute slave owners. People are conspiring to make sure these cases are buried s says the International anti-slavery. Teach people slavery is a crime, as Mauritanians who live in isolated parts of the Sahara desert often dont know slavery is a crime. People in the government and non-governmental organizations should go into the countryside to educate people about the 2007 anti-slavery law and  make there rights clearly known. Majority of the population is illiterate, you cannot make brochures and distribute them.

The government must counter cultural assumptions about what happens to slaves after they escape. Slaves fear if they break the chain they will be punished and this should change by educational campaigns, In the whole of Mauritania there are only two centers designed to help people who escape from slavery. There has to be a programme of education for the slaves that have escape from the yoke of slavery and they have to build bigger centers to help the ex-slave. With education these ex-slaves can become very productive members of the economy. These slaves should be paid compensation  for the time they spent in slavery and the govenment should set up special funding that wil help with the slaves compensation.
