BLACK SOCIAL HISTORY : JOE LOUIS " THE BROWN BOMBER " - GOES INTO " THE HALL OF BLACK GENIUS "

Joseph Louis Barrow born May 13th 1914 and died April 12th 1981, better known as Joe Louis was an American Professional Boxer and a world heavy weight champion from 1937 to 1949. He is considered to be one of the greatest heavy weight of all time. Nick named the Brown Bomber, Louis helped elevate boxing from a nadir in popularity in the post Jack Dempsey ear by establishing a reputation as an honest hard working fighter at a time when the sport was dominated by gambling interest. Louis championship reigned lasted for 140 consecutive months during which he participated in 2 championship fights, a 27th fight against Ezzard Charles, was a challenge for the heavy weight title and so is not included in Louis reign.  All in all Joe was victorious in 25 successful title defenses, a record for the heavy weight of all time by the International Boxing Research Organization and was ranked on the ring list of the 100 greatest puncher of all time.













































Louis cultural impact was felt well outside the ring as he was widely regarded as the first African American to acheive the status of a nationwide hero within the United States and was also focal point of anti-Nazi sentiments leading up to and during the second world war. He was also instrumental in integrating the game of golf under a sponsors exemption in a PGA event in 1932. Louis was born in Chambers Alabama the seventh of eight children.
